Lake County Arrest Records and Charges
An arrest record is the sheriff or police-side record that a person was taken into custody or processed after an alleged offense. It may connect to booking information, arresting agency, custody status, charges listed at booking, bond information, and jail records. The formal court charge record begins when the Lake County Prosecutor files a complaint, information, indictment, or other charging document in court. That filed charge becomes part of the court case and can be searched like other public criminal court records when access rules allow it.
This distinction matters in Lake County because jail records, sheriff warrant records, and court records use different access channels. The CitizenRIMS jail roster is useful for custody status, while MyCase shows the filed court case and charge status. For the full case file, plea, disposition, and sentencing record, use the criminal court records page. For current custody and booking context, use the inmate records page.
The Lake County Public Defender page is one official local source tied to felony defense after charges are filed.
Defense eligibility and appointed-counsel issues are separate from public lookup, but they often arise soon after formal charges are filed.
Search Lake County Arrest Records
Use multiple channels because no single Lake County search covers every arrest-to-charge step. For current custody, check the Lake County CitizenRIMS incarcerated people lookup and sheriff jail contacts. For filed court charges, search Indiana MyCase by defendant name, case number, or attorney information. For sentenced state-prison custody, use the Indiana DOC offender locator. For official court copies or missing documents, contact the Clerk of the Lake Circuit/Superior Court.
- Check the jail roster or sheriff contacts for booking and custody information.
- Search MyCase for the defendant name or case number to find filed court charges.
- Open the case and review charge descriptions, statute references, level, hearings, and case status.
- Compare the charge list with docket entries because charges may be amended, reduced, or dismissed.
- Request certified copies from the clerk when the record must be official.
The U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Indiana handles federal charges, which are not Lake County state-court charges.
Federal indictments and state prosecutor filings use different courts, different clerks, and different docket systems.
Court Charges After Arrest
After an arrest or investigation, the prosecutor decides whether to file formal charges. Indiana uses the term prosecutor, not district attorney. The Lake County Prosecutor is Bernard A. Carter, and the prosecutor's divisions include criminal, bad check, infraction deferral, pre-trial diversion, and victim/witness resources. One arrest may lead to one charge, several charges, amended charges, or no filed case.
| Document | Who Files It | What It Starts |
|---|---|---|
| Complaint | Prosecutor or sworn charging source | Common charging document for many criminal cases. |
| Information | Prosecutor | Formal charge filed by the State of Indiana in court. |
| Indictment | Grand jury or federal charging path | Often used in serious or federal matters, depending on court. |
The Lake County Prosecutor divisions page identifies local program and criminal division resources.
Prosecutor programs may affect whether an infraction or criminal charge later shows dismissal, deferral, plea, or conviction status.
Lake County Charge Status
Charge status changes as the criminal case moves. A pending charge means the accusation is still active. An amended or reduced charge means the original count changed. A dismissed charge means the court record reflects that count or case was ended. Indiana records may also show a plea, verdict, sentencing order, probation, restitution, bond, warrant, or other event in the chronological case summary.
| Status | What It Means |
|---|---|
| Pending | The court charge remains open and has not reached final disposition. |
| Amended or reduced | The prosecutor or court changed the count, level, or description from the original filing. |
| Dismissed | The charge or case was ended without a conviction on that count. |
| Conviction | A guilty plea or finding of guilt was entered and may lead to sentence terms. |
| Expunged or sealed | Public access is limited by court order or Indiana expungement law. |
Charges and Convictions Compared
Being charged is not the same as being convicted. Lake County arrest records and booking charges may appear before the prosecutor files formal charges, and formal charges may later change. A conviction requires a guilty plea, verdict, or finding. Search results should be read count by count, because one case can include both convicted and dismissed charges.
| Point | Charge | Conviction |
|---|---|---|
| Meaning | An accusation filed or listed in connection with arrest or court case. | A guilty plea, guilty finding, or verdict entered by the court. |
| Where shown | Jail roster, charging document, MyCase charge list, docket entries. | Disposition, sentencing order, judgment, probation, fines, and related entries. |
| Can change | Yes, charges can be amended, reduced, added, or dismissed. | Changes usually require appeal, post-conviction relief, modification, or expungement. |
Sealed and Expunged Charges
Indiana Code Title 35 includes expungement rules for qualifying arrests, charges, and convictions. Arrests or charges that did not result in conviction may qualify after dismissal, acquittal, no true finding, or nonprosecution if statutory rules are met. Conviction expungement depends on offense level, sentence completion, waiting period, payment obligations, and criminal-history conditions. Juvenile, sealed, expunged, and in-camera materials are restricted from ordinary public lookup.
| Record Limit | Public Effect | Lake County Channel |
|---|---|---|
| Sealed filing | Hidden from public access unless a court allows inspection. | Ask the court or clerk about permitted access. |
| Granted expungement | Public online access is limited under Indiana access rules. | File or verify through the court that handled the case. |
| Juvenile charge | Generally not an ordinary public lookup record. | Juvenile Division or court order process. |
Background Check Limits
Casual lookup is not the same as an FCRA-compliant background check. MyCase, jail roster entries, warrant searches, and public case summaries can help identify public records, but they should not be used for employment, housing, credit, insurance, or other regulated screening decisions. Verify any Lake County arrest or charge record with the originating court, clerk, sheriff, or prosecutor before relying on it.
The U.S. Attorney contact page is useful when a charge is federal rather than a Lake County state-court charge.
Use the court named in the case caption to decide whether a record belongs in MyCase or a federal docket system.
Important: This website is not a consumer reporting agency and does not provide FCRA-regulated background reports.
